Skillz Employee Spotlight: Stephen Yu, Director of Marketing and Revenue
Stephen Yu, our Director of Marketing and Revenue, can be described in many ways – he has a competitive personality, always looks slightly serious despite being a stress-free kind of guy, and refuses to wear denim of any kind.
Originally from Houston, Stephen wanted to be a brain surgeon when he was a kid, but later found his curiosity and true interest lied in numbers and analytics. He studied economics and math at Duke University to explore his fascination for consumer behavior, which is a big part of his role here.
Stephen is responsible for our day-to-day revenue growth, and oversees two teams: User Acquisition and Marketing Analytics. Luckily, Stephen has the support of capable and talented team members in managing these important functions.
“Everyone on the team is very curious and loves to think about brain teasers and other intellectually stimulating problems,” complimented Stephen.
Bubble Shooter Tournaments is his favorite Skillz game – his high score is a solid 350,000 points! Stephen also enjoys how gaming is not just involved in the Skillz business, but also in our company culture.
“I really like the fact that everyone here is a gamer in some sense,” commented Stephen. “A lot of us play video games, but many Skillzians also just like board games, puzzles and challenges!”
Although he enjoys spending entire days inside playing video games, he also likes being active, whether it’s playing tennis or rock climbing. In fact, he was a national champion in the US Tennis Association Men’s League in 2012!
Stephen is also an avid backpacker. His birthday actually falls on Christmas, but his favorite thing about the holidays is visiting the National Parks because they tend to be less crowded during the winter than the summer time.
