  • The widely anticipated Nintendo Switch will launch globally on March 3 for $299.99. The device is a composite of everything the company’s been working toward for decades: a game system you can dock with a TV, which you can also remove to go mobile, and enables you to attach a pair of controllers called Joy-Cons that let you play anywhere.   • Nintendo is joining the likes of Sony and Microsoft and launching its own paid online subscription service for the new Switch device. Details are thin beyond staples like voice chat, but Nintendo confirmed that a premium online service will replace its previous model in which players could access multiplayer for free. Nintendo stresses that it will be an improvement over its past game-specific services. (The Verge)
  • Rovio has opened a new game studio in London with a focus on mobile massively multiplayer online games (MMOs). The move enables the company to expand its in-house development capacity. It will focus on new intellectual properties that go beyond the “Angry Birds” universe. The London studio joins four other Rovio in-house studios, which includes three in Finland and one in Sweden.   • The “Titanfall: Frontline” mobile game has been cancelled. The game was promised for iOS and Android, and would have been a card game rather than something resembling the console titles. The game made it to the point of a beta, but ultimately the development team thought the gameplay was too lacking compared to the original titles. (SlashGear)

  • Lionsgate has invested an undisclosed amount into Immortals, an eSports organization with teams competing in “League of Legends,” “Overwatch,” “CS:GO” and “Super Smash Bros.” Immortals is a fairly new North American eSports organization, created in October 2015 with a focus on “League of Legends.” In May, Lionsgate announced a partnership with the Electronic Sports League and Pilgrim Media on an eSports television show.
