Week in Review: Facebook Debuts Live Streaming on Samsung Gear VR, Twitch Launches Pulse, Sydney Hosts Largest Australian eSports Event

  • Twitch has introduced Pulse, its own gamer news feed. Pulse isn’t just for text updates. The social stream, which supports links from services including Vimeo, YouTube, Twitch and Imgur, will also go live on Twitch’s mobile app. In an effort to boost engagement, any Pulse post will appear to a user’s followers as well as their friends right on the front page. Also, broadcasters can create posts from the broadcaster dashboard or the channel feed. (TechCrunch)
  • Washington D.C. is sponsoring a major eSports team and building an eSports arena. NRG eSports, which fields teams in seven games including “Overwatch,” “CS:GO,” and “Hearthstone,” will be sponsored by Events DC going forward. The $65 million, 4,200 seat arena being built for the Washington Mystics of the WNBA will also be fully tailored and wired for eSports. (Polygon)
  • The “World of Warcraft” Arena World Championship 2017 prize pool will total $590,000, the biggest ever for the competitive “World of Warcraft” event. The 2017 format has more qualifier cups, with five qualifiers in both the North American and European regions. Each qualifier will have a $6,000 prize pool. Blizzard will be announcing more details in the coming weeks. (Yahoo! eSports)
  • Team Liquid has signed Yiliang “Doublelift” Peng to a contract through the end of the North American “League of Legends” Championship Series spring split. Known as one of the best in North America, Doublelift was not participating in the 2017 spring split after taking a step down from the starting lineup of Team SoloMid following the 2016 World Championships.   • GitHub has pulled back the curtain on its “Github for Unity” extension, which aims to bring the service’s workflow and other features to the popular game engine. In short, the extension allows game developers to integrate Git and Github into their workflow, even if they’re versioning large binary assets. The extension will get an alpha release in the next few weeks, while the project will be completely open source. (Gamasutra)
