Skillz Hosts Data Driven Women Meetup

Last week, we hosted a Data Driven Women meetup at our headquarters in San Francisco! During this event, five Skillz employees spoke about their career journeys, successes and challenges along the way, and their relationship to data as women in tech. The event began with food and drinks, followed by presentations and a live Q&A with our featured speakers, finally concluding with a networking session.

Miriam Aguirre (SVP of Engineering)

Cassie Zhou (Associate Product Manager)

Elena Palesis (Data Engineer)

Our speakers were excited to share their unique stories and enjoyed feeling the engagement of the audience throughout the event. They touched on topics including the importance of giving back to the community, what it’s like to be a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry, and their personal experiences coming from diverse backgrounds.

One of our speakers, Pallas Horwitz, reflects: “I loved having the opportunity to discuss our data journeys as women. People were very brave in discussing struggles they have encountered, and this is definitely not the type of candid, empowering conversation we would have heard in the industry five years ago.”

The networking period allowed attendees to talk not only with one another, but also directly with the featured panelists about their interests and curiosities surrounding data, technology, and the Skillz system specifically. During this portion of the event, career coaches were also available to help with resume building, interview tips, and career planning.

Overall, the meetup was positively received by everyone in attendance, and we were happy to provide an environment that sparked these important conversations. After the meetup, speaker Hope Pettway commented: “I think the event was excellent and really empowering to be a part of. I appreciate that Skillz was involved and look forward to similar events in the future.”
