Employee Spotlight: Elliott, Director of Customer Advocacy
Originally from Southern California, Elliott currently leads our Portland office as the Director of Customer Advocacy! In this role, he oversees the Customer Advocacy team in their pursuit to ensure all player questions, withdrawals, and prize shipments are addressed in a timely and thorough manner. It only takes a few minutes speaking with Elliott to see why he’s such a great fit for this job. In his words, “I love what I do because I’m able to make sure players receive fair resolutions and, as a result, also build trust in our brand.”
Elliott wasn’t always certain of where his career would take him, originally daydreaming as a child of one day creating fun toys. After graduating from UCLA with a degree in fine arts, he first worked for a ceramics studio where he ran the kilns before beginning his long-term career in customer service.
He heard about Skillz through friends and former coworkers, and joined the team in February 2016. If asked why he chose Skillz, Elliott’s mind immediately goes to the passion he sees emanating from each Skillzian – and how special it’s been to help build the company from the ground up. He notes, “I’m passionate about making the gaming industry better, and was excited about the opportunity to impact more than just one single game or studio at a time.” Though Elliott did not fulfill his childhood dream of being a toymaker, he didn’t end up too far off!
Outside of the office, Elliott enjoys brewing beer with fellow Skillzian Cate. They’ve gotten so good at it that their spiced peach flavor even won first place in a Portland brewing competition! Aside from crafting award-winning beverages, Elliott also likes to spend time hiking with his wife and their chihuahua, traveling (he hopes to one day visit Lithuania), and playing video games.
His Skillz-enabled game of choice is a newer title called Laps Tournaments! A gamer at heart, Elliott thoroughly enjoys testing out the latest releases on our platform. One of his other favorite video games to play in general is Transistor; he likes its futuristic feel and the thrill of fighting fascism.
Topping the list of Elliott’s proudest professional moments is building up the Skillz Portland office from scratch. He often reflects on how much his CA department has grown, and the various office spaces they’ve used throughout Portland as their headcount increases. After being with Skillz for two and a half years, Elliott most appreciates the seven core values we infuse throughout our entire business: honor, mission, collaboration, productivity, willingness, frugality and balance.
“What sets Skillz apart from other tech companies, in my opinion, is our strong foundation of integrity,” says Elliott. “There is a real and genuine commitment to being transparent at every level, and that ensures everyone is on the same page no matter how quickly we’re growing.”
