Skillz Heads to the Beach for Our Annual Company Offsite!

Last week, Skillzians packed up and took a trip to Santa Cruz for two days of relaxation, bonding and discussion about the bright future of the company. This annual event allows employees from the San Francisco, Portland, Boston, and Los Angeles offices to come together in one place. With our rapidly growing headcount, it’s always a valued time for Skillz employees new and old to take a break from our daily work schedules and build lasting relationships.

Our SF-based employees began their adventure, unsurprisingly, with a competition during the bus ride down the coast. During the game, fun facts were read aloud and Skillzians had to guess which employee submitted each fact about themself. The stakes were high; whoever guessed first (and correctly) won a $2 bill, but if you answered incorrectly, you had to give up one of the $2 bills you accumulated earlier in the game.

Upon arriving at the resort in Santa Cruz, we enjoyed a delicious lunch before settling in for a meeting led by our co-founders that provided insight into our company’s history and our upcoming initiatives. One Skillzian said, “It was inspiring to hear about all of the obstacles we have overcome as a team and exciting to discuss our future plans. Everyone had the opportunity to provide candid feedback on current processes and give suggestions for improvements.”

Later on, employees spent their free time playing beach volleyball, relaxing by the pool, and catching up with coworkers while enjoying everything else the resort had to offer!

One evening, the entire company attended a trivia night that put our technology, entertainment, and history knowledge to the test, with the winning teams taking home exciting prizes! On another day, we also broke out into teams to make creative, Skillz-themed music videos.

We closed out our offsite adventure with a formal cocktail party on the beach, where Skillzians let loose and enjoyed amazing food, company, music, and (most importantly) a decadent make your own s’mores bar featuring five separate fire pits to roast marshmallows!

This was our largest company offsite to date, and certainly one for the books. It brought us closer together as a team, and we returned to work more motivated than ever to work together to reach our company goals!
